I got my VoyageHouston article !

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aurie M. Williams.

Hi Aurie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the Geechee Corridor of South Carolina. My existence as a queer Black biracial raised on South Carolina soil contributed to the emergence of my healing efforts as a bodyworker. In 2017, I received my licensure for Professional Clinical Massage Therapy from Southeastern College [formerly known as Southeastern Institute] of North Charleston, SC. I coupled being a myotherapist with my experience in activism and community organizing and have pursued the long journey of promoting massage therapy as accessible healthcare. I took a break of intentional rest in Houston, TX, during the summer of 2020 and have been licensed in both Texas and South Carolina since. Today, I have worked as a professional clinical massage therapist in the state of Texas longer than I have in my home state of South Carolina, and that realization is simultaneously bittersweet and exhilarating.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 2022, I returned to college to satisfy a Bachelor’s in Biology with intent to pursue a Master’s in Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM] and Acupuncture. In addition to highlighting massage therapy as healthcare, I want to honor Eastern medicine’s contribution to collective wellness in my private practice as a TCM practitioner. Navigating STEM academia as a 31-year-old mom, independent business owner, and community coordinator presents challenges I find myself tasked to solve. And that’s okay – that’s to be expected. Thankfully, I have a solid support system (my family, friends, and community) so it’s not a journey I have to navigate solo dolo.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in neuromuscular protocols, which allows me to best serve treatment participants that are actively seeking an integrative form of pain management and relief.

Because I intentionally build alongside other community cornerstones, like licensed professional counselors and mixed media artists, I am able to facilitate a more wholesome wellness experience. This collaborative process creates a symbiosis that is foundational to my private practice, and my treatment participants find joy in my ability to offer such in addition to personalized myotherapy.

What does success mean to you?
Success is experiencing daily dosages of joy.

Success is pressing forward even when lack presents itself.

Success is making today better than yesterday.

Success is being able to welcome rest comfortably.
